Curriculm, Instruction, and Assessment

Our SAU is in the second year of designing our curriculum based on competency-based education. Numerous members from administrators to first year teachers have been involved in this process, and continue to put into practice the elements of competency-based education.

NH Minimum Standards For Public School Approval require students master district competencies. The mastery of the graduation competencies, indicate student achievement.

We believe a competency-based education approach will allow all WMRSD students to succeed academically, personally, and socially through personalized pathways in their future endeavors.

Competency-based education is a system  of instruction, assessment, grading, and academic reporting that is based on students demonstrating that they have learned the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn as they progress through their education. When a student shows they are competent, they have transferred the knowledge and/or the skills of a course of study into a novel situation.

We have enacted steering committees, comprised of teachers from all grades and across the district, to devise curriculum documents.

The district curriculum plan is to continue to evaluate and refine district curriculum. This work will include:

  1. Curriculum alignment and instructional unit development to encompass the standards.
  2. Integration of science, social studies, and technology education into literacy instruction.
  3. Integration of important College and Career readiness skills throughout the curriculum.  These are embodied in the 'Image of a Graduate' .
  4. Integration of 21st century themes throughout the curriculum.  21st century themes include global awareness; financial, economic, business and entrepreneurial literacy; civic literacy; health literacy; and environmental literacy.
